Cheese Grater Reviews
1. Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater
Spring Chef is an independently owned company that’s based out of Texas. They currently sell their products through e-commerce platforms and aim to provide consumers with exceptional customer support and high-quality kitchen tools that help make the culinary experience better.
Spring Chef not only offers high-grade cheese graters, but they give their customers what they need with other tools. We reviewed the Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater as it’s one of their top-selling products.
The Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater is an incredible grater that is available at an exceptional price. It’s made of stainless steel with grating edges that are razor sharp.
The base is constructed using a thick, durable rubber that ensures it doesn’t slip when shredding your food ingredients. The handle is made from the same stainless steel as the grater itself, and it’s dishwasher safe.
One of the prime features is it’s a box grater, so there are four graters in one. There is the coarse shred, medium shred, slicer, and the fine shred-zester. Additionally, Spring Chef stands behind their products as much as their customers do by offering a lifetime warranty.
What's to like about the Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater
The grater itself is durable and put together very well, and the edges are incredibly sharp. We also like that the handle is slightly rounded, which makes it easy to grip. The grater worked on multiple types of cheeses including hard, soft, and medium cheese, and it also worked great when zesting citrus and other fruits.
What's not to like about the Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater
One significant aspect that we didn’t like was how far apart the grating holes are on the large shredder side, and it seemed to take longer to shred a decent amount of cheese because of it. While the handle is easy to grip and made from the same stainless steel as the grater, we did feel like it might be more comfortable if it was covered in a soft rubber, which could have also added an extra grip.
2. Cuisinart CTG-00-BG Boxed Grater
Cuisinart is one of the world’s most renowned and reputable brands that have been around for over 40 years. They have more than 600 people worldwide who devote their attention to creating concepts to design innovative tools that work for both professional chefs and home cooks.
The wide range of highly regarded kitchen products gives customers the option of getting everything they need from one brand, and they get the assurance of knowing it’s high-quality. The Cuisinart CTG-00-BG Boxed Grater is just one grater out of many that come from the Cuisinart line, and we wanted to find out if it’s the best cheese grater today.
The Cuisinart CTG-00-BG Boxed Grater is designed to shred cheese, ginger, nuts, vegetables, citrus fruits, and more. It includes the exclusive surface glide Cuisinart technology, which ensures that the face of the shredding surface is spread evenly, as well as for minimal grating resistance.
The grater is made from stainless steel with ultra-sharp grating edges on all sides of the grater. There is also a comfortable, ergonomically designed, removable handle that’s made from high-quality black plastic, while the base is removable and made from the same material. Cuisinart made sure to develop their grater with the benefits of having a larger shredding surface for effortless grating.
What's to like about the Cuisinart CTG-00-BG Boxed Grater
We love that the handle is thick and comfortable to hold onto while shredding ingredients. We also like that the base of the grater does a great job with keeping the shredder in place while grating.
It’s an excellent value for the money spent, and it’s very sturdy. We also really liked the different shapes and sizes for grating, making it ideal for grating multiple ingredients.
What's not to like about the Cuisinart CTG-00-BG Boxed Grater
We immediately didn’t like how large the grater is, and it wasn’t something that we were expecting. It’s quite bulky, which makes it challenging to store.
We also found through further investigating that because the base and handle are removable, water can get trapped in the grip, and bits of cheese and other shredded food get trapped in the bottom. This isn’t a major issue if you don’t mind removing the base to make sure there is no food build-up.
3. Zyliss Classic Rotary Cheese Grater
Zyliss has been manufacturing innovative and creative kitchen tools since 1948. Since then, they have created a vast line of kitchen products that help their customers, both professional and otherwise, make restaurant-quality meals.
Even with their massive range of products, their mission remains simple. They’ve promised to make their customers smile while using their products. Zyliss has a variety of cheese graters in their line, and we chose to review the Zyliss Classic Rotary Cheese Grater because it’s the most universally used amongst their rotary graters.
The Zyliss Classic Rotary Cheese Grater is made of durable, hard plastic that is built to last. It includes an ergonomically designed grip to make it easier for you to handle without hurting your hands.
Compared to some other rotary graters, the Zyliss Classic is compact, so it’s easier to store in a cabinet or spacious drawer. The drum and handle of the grater separate easily, so you can make cleanup a breeze. The handle also switches sides, making it convenient for both right-handed and left-handed people.
The drum of the rotary grater itself is good for hard cheese, nuts, chocolate, and more. It’s versatile, and the sharp blades work well with the majority of dense cheeses. Also, the Zyliss Classic Rotary Cheese Grater is NSF Restaurant Certified, which means it conforms to the strict public health standards that all operating restaurants need to comply with.
What's to like about the Zyliss Classic Rotary Cheese Grater
The fact that Zyliss ensured that their product is NSF Restaurant Certified was a high selling point for us. Shredding rock-hard parmesan cheese is difficult with most shredders, but you do get more shredded in half the amount of time with the Zyliss Classic. We also like that both right-handed and left-handed individuals can use it conveniently.
What's not to like about the Zyliss Classic Rotary Cheese Grater
Unfortunately, continuously cranking the handle can be exhausting and your arms get sore after a while, depending on the cheese that you use. We also found that it’s not the greatest with soft cheeses, and they sometimes get stuck in the drum. If you don’t notice it right away, then it can become difficult to clean out.
4. OXO Good Grips Multi Grater
OXO has a universal design on all of their products and a philosophy that has their products working to make everyday life easier for their consumer. Regardless of age, gender, or experience level, they have products that cover a wide range of industries. Additionally, OXO is a philanthropic company that matches commitments made to help the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Foundation which was started by two members of the company.
We chose the OXO Good Grips Multi Grater to review because we felt like it was a good deed to give back to a good-giving company.
The OXO Good Grips Multi Grater is an innovative grater that folds in two, making it extremely versatile when grating, zesting, or shredding items. It can grate both medium and coarse ingredients with its blades and works on countertops, over bowls, or on a cutting board.
The way that the folding design works allow the tool to stand upright while the grating surfaces lock together for easy storage and quick separation when it comes time for grating. Additionally, the tool is made from stainless steel and has an ergonomically designed handle that’s made from soft, non-slip rubber.
What's to like about the OXO Good Grips Multi Grater
The design of the OXO Good Grips Multi Grater was what initially caught our attention during the review. It’s very convenient, folds easily, and can get converted into a flat surface which we really like. Also, the non-slip rubber handle was comfortable, and when we were finished with the grating, our palms weren’t red and sore.
What's not to like about the OXO Good Grips Multi Grater
Unfortunately, we found that the hole sizes were just too small when we didn’t want to grate our cheese or other ingredients finely. It took a lot of pressure to get what we needed as well, and it’s also more on the pricier side when compared to other cheese graters.
5. Kuuk Drum Grater
Kuuk is known for their aesthetically pleasing, high-quality “kuukware” that customers everywhere want to get their hands on. Sold in both retail stores and through e-commerce platforms, the Kuuk brand is easily found. They offer a wide range of products that stem from the Kuuk Drum Grater all the way to stackable freezer boxes.
The Kuuk Drum Grater is one of their most popular items, making it the primary reason we chose to review it.
The Kuuk Drum Grater is made of durable white plastic with bright green accents that make it stand out from the rest of the rotary graters on the shelf. The drum itself is made of BPA-free stainless steel that has two rotary drums that are equipped with razor-sharp blades.
One drum is ideal for grating larger pieces of your ingredients, while the smaller drum is perfect for zesting or grating parmesan over your pasta. It’s simple, easy to use, and has a suction base that ensures the grater stays firmly in place during grating.
What's to like about the Kuuk Drum Grater
The design of the Kuuk Drum Grater is one of the things we really like. It’s bright, refreshing, and stands out amongst the standard rotary graters on the market.
We also love that it includes two rotary drums that are made from BPA-free stainless steel materials. We also didn’t have any issues grating softer cheeses, which was a nice experience.
What's not to like about the Kuuk Drum Grater
When using the Kuuk Drum Grater, we found that the rubber suction at the bottom of the grater kept coming off of the main piece. It was also more difficult to crank the lever than we had expected. The handle of the rotary grater also doesn’t seem to lock into place and seemed to be flimsy.
Picking out a cheese grater that is going to work for you is relatively simple, but you might find yourself overwhelmed with all of the choices available. Regardless of how easy it might be, there are still some considerations that you should take into account when purchasing your grater, as you want to ensure it covers all of your needs. Thus, we’ve created a simple buyer’s guide that’s going to help you through the purchasing process even more.
There are many brands of cheese graters on the market; some you are going to recognize, like CuisinArt and Microplane, and there are others that you won’t. When you’re looking at brands, there’s no specific one that you need to buy, as you just need to consider whether their brand name has a good reputation or not. Having a solid reputation in coordination with the features that you’re looking for such as multi-purpose abilities, ergonomic handles, and high-quality material, are all things you need to look at when assessing a cheese grater brand.
Regardless of the type of cheese grater that you buy, the materials used to construct it are highly relevant. Food graters come into a lot of contact with water, whether it’s from the food itself or during cleaning.
Purchasing a cheese grater made from tin materials isn’t a great idea because not only does it bend easier than stainless steel, it’s also not resistant to rust, which might cause more issues later on. Additionally, you want to make sure that the rubber on the grater’s handles is soft, thick, durable, and designed in a way wherein you aren’t going to get calluses on your skin from gripping it during the grating process.
There are various types of cheese graters that you can purchase, but only three of them are the most used in households.
- Box graters: The box grater is the most commonly used grater in homes. It has a variety of grating surfaces that make it the ideal tool for grating cheese, vegetables, and even zesting fruit. The bases of box graters typically have rubber around them to keep them from sliding, and a good quality grater is going to have an ergonomically designed handle.
- Microplane or flat graters: These graters are fantastic for those of you who don’t have a lot of storage space, and they’re ideal for grating harder cheese such as Parmesan. While they are slim and great for use for hard cheese and as a zester and grinder, they aren’t recommended for soft cheese. However, they do fit comfortably over a bowl to grate cheese over pasta.
- Rotary cheese graters: Another favorite cheese grater in homes is the rotary grater. These graters are easier to use than the standard box grater, and they work perfectly with hard cheeses. They are also safer to use because you simply place your ingredient into the drum, and the grating process happens when you turn the handle. Typically, they come with various drums to grate and shred different food items, but they are quite bulky and would require more storage space.
The size of your cheese grater is going to depend on your circumstances. If you know that you have limited space and you are going to be zesting, grinding, or grating hard cheeses, it’s best to go with a flat grater with smaller diameter holes.
Do note though that the sizes of the holes in both box graters and interchangeable drums in rotary graters make them a multi-use tool. As such, take some time to consider what your primary purpose is, and go from there.
First and foremost, you need to look for a grater that is made of stainless steel and has an ergonomically designed handle. Those features ensure that your kitchen tool is going to last, and your hands are going to be comfortable while grating. Other features that might make the grating process better is to purchase one that is dishwasher safe, easy to clean, easy to store, and possibly one that includes a storage container for the contents that you grate.
The typical length of the cheese grater itself ranges from approximately nine inches to 11 inches. The length varies depending on the type of grater that you purchase. Box graters are usually longer whereas flat graters usually are around the nine-inch mark.
Cheese Grater FAQs
How to Use a Cheese Grater?
Using a cheese grater is very simple, regardless of your skillset. You really don’t need to be a professionally trained chef to use one.
When using a box or flat grater, the process remains the same. You just take your block of cheese and grate it against the sharpened edges of the holes. The razor sharp edges work against the food to make shredded pieces of food.
When using a rotary grater, the process is slightly different but still simple. Instead of grating the food against the grater, you place it in a drum that has the right size of shredder you want and then just turn the handle.
What Is a Cheese Grater?
A cheese grater or a shredder is a kitchen utensil that is used to not only grate cheese, but other types of food items such as vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Graters are usually made from stainless steel and have holes of different diameters with sharp edges. When the food item grates against those sharp edges, it shreds them into smaller pieces.
What Is a Cheese Grater Used For?
Cheese graters are used to prepare particular food ingredients and turn them into smaller pieces. When taking a block of cheese, you use the grater to turn it into shredded pieces that you can use to top your pizza, pasta, and other things.
Additionally, you can use your cheese grater to create garnishes or zest your meals with lemon and various other types of fruits. They’ve also been used to grind nuts into fragments that resemble dust.
How to Clean Cheese Grater?
Cleaning your cheese grater is very simple. Most cheese graters are dishwasher- and water-safe, so you can just pop them into the dishwasher, or scrub them with a sponge, soap, and hot water.
That said, there is still the question of what to do with the small bits of food and cheese that get stuck in the holes. They’re far too sharp to run your fingers over it, so how do you get rid of it?
It might sound like a funny concept, but using a toothbrush is the optimal way to clean the dried, leftover cheese and food bits that don’t come off in the dishwasher. The bristles are small enough to get into the holes, and all you need to do is scrub the dried cheese away.
Are Cheese Graters Dishwasher Safe?
The majority of standard cheese graters are dishwasher safe, though you do need to look at the materials used to make them. If you purchase a cheaper, flimsy cheese grater, it might be made from tin instead of stainless steel.
It’s not recommended that you put tin in the dishwasher because it is prone to rust. All you need to do is look at the packaging, and it’s going to clearly tell you whether or not your grater is dishwasher safe.
Trust us when we say that we were munching on a lot of cheese while doing this review, but who can complain about that? Each of the graters on our list has their own pros and cons that make them unique in their own way, but we had to determine which is the best one.
After careful deliberation and looking at brand reputation, quality, features, materials used, and various other aspects, we concluded that the Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater is the best cheese grater that you can buy, especially at such a great price. It does have a few cons, but the benefits that come with it outweigh them.
Being able to shred your cheese, vegetables, and fruits quickly is more beneficial than worrying about added features. There is more than enough value with the cost of the product, and it is priced decently enough to be friendly on the wallet of practically everyone.
Go ahead! Pick up the Spring Chef Four-Sided Box Grater as soon as you can. You won’t regret it!
